Nominations announced for TMC Women’s Health Network Stream award

HOUSTON – (April 19, 2013) – Nine exceptional women have been nominated for the annual Kathryn S. Stream, Ph.D. Award for Excellence in Women’s Health, which recognizes a Houston-area researcher, educator, practitioner or community leader who has attained an outstanding record of achievement in advancing women’s health through collaborations in education, research and/or advocacy.

             A committee of judges will consider the qualifications of the nominees, all of whom have contributed significantly to the health of women locally and around the world. The winner will be announced at a breakfast celebrating National Women’s Health Week starting at 7:30 a.m. May 16, 2013, at the Junior League of Houston, 1811 Briar Oaks Lane. The breakfast, sponsored by the Texas Medical Center Women’s Health Network, the Women’s Fund for Health Education and Research and the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce, features keynote speaker Y. Ping Sun, University Representative, Rice University, and of counsel with the law firm of Yetter Coleman LLP. Individual tickets to the event are $50 and tables are $500.

The award honors Dr. Kathryn S. Stream, a founding mother of the TMC Women’s Health Network. She served as Vice Provost for Health Affairs from 1998 to 2001 at Texas Woman’s University-Houston, and as Senior Vice President of the Texas Medical Center Corporation from 2001-2008. She played a major role in shaping and nurturing the TMC Women’s Health Network. This award was created in 2008 when Dr. Stream retired as Senior Vice President of the Texas Medical Center. She was its first recipient.

The person selected to receive the 2013 Stream Award will exemplify the core principles of the TMC Women’s Health Network with a record of achievement in advancing women’s health through collaborations in education, research, and/or advocacy. Recognized contributions to these principles may be accrued through professional duties or volunteer service.

Previous recipients of the Stream Award include: Dr. Judith McFarlane, professor of nursing at Texas Woman’s University; Dr. Peggy Smith, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine; Dr. Therese Bevers, professor of clinical cancer prevention at MD Anderson Cancer Center; Dr. Margo Hilliard Alford, senior vice president for community services for Harris Health Services, and Dorothy Gibbons, president of The Rose.
